Introduction

As we continue with the blog set, keep your eye on the prize, the mindsets that have formed and allowed the ‘us versus them’ thinking to develop in this nation. Food is the great equalizer and always will be, but many go to bed and school without food. Our Big Brother wants us to think about everything but the truth regarding the growing food shortages in this nation.

So, how does mental health, addiction, and long-term medical issues play into food insecurities and food deserts in America? Do you believe that the two run separate or could it be possible that one feeds the other, no food, no sustainable meals source and chronic conditions get worse? Think for yourself!

We were once the Breadbasket of the world, if you look back to the era just after World War 2, but now restrictions, laws, EPA and the like have placed cut back and limits where there ought not be any and the end results is a starving nation, and the deeper problem is this, lack of food, increase cost of food, isa triggering factor for homelessness.

An Opening Word

       Hosea 12: 6

Therefore, return to your God! Hold fast to love and mercy, to righteousness and justice,  and wait (expectantly) for your God continually!

        Psalm 25: 6

Remember, O Lord, Your tender mercy and loving kindness; for they have been ever from of old

Data for this Discussion

47.4 million in 2023 lived in a food-insecure home

Nearly 14 million children face hunger daily

Lack of food impacts homeless people every day, worsening conditions such pneumonia, hypothermia, mental health issues, diabetes

Approximately 1 in 7 kids live with hunger

Crisis kicked off during the Pandemic and has not turned around, food is expensive

Dollar Stores, Quick Trips style stores, sell the cheap stuff, not healthy, but fill bellies

$25.00 budget-friendly, 1 or 2 days for single, 1 or 2 meals for a family

Special Note: Most shelters do not feed the people staying there

Our nation’s lawsuit mindset has added to the hunger basis, can’t give food away, we may be sued…

American Food Deserts

Transportation, Income, Family Structure, Availability of good, healthy food, closure of farmer markets, increased regulations against family farms, and EPA demanding certain unimportant micro eco-systems be protected, all have fed, developed and led to food deserts. Now in our states where dairy businesses were strong and produced an income for the family and food for the nation, we have to worry about cow farts impacting the environment, according to the EPA, and we wonder why we have food deserts in America!

From the post-war boom of the 1950s to the economic struggles of the post-Biden era, how have we gone from being a near self-sufficient nation, food-wise, to one that imports millions of tons of food every year? We are talking about a short 70 years and so much has changed, and we have kids starving and trying to focus at school, moms working three jobs to put food on the table, grandparents not taking medications to eat, and the list could go on. All the while, food is getting more expensive, and we have just quietly adjusted and some just went hungry.

What is a Food Desert

Let me introduce you to another Big Brother term that has been invented to ‘help us understand’ some of the problems they have created. This term, food desert, along with its food insecurity, are ones that we did not know about just 20 years ago, but now are all over the place. Remember, this entire blog set is talking about mindsets and how they are developed to keep us thinking in the way that the government believes is best, not the right or biblical manner.

Food Deserts, low-income areas, rural and urban areas, where people can lack access to good, nutritious, and affordable food. Especially where supermarkets are lacking. Now, what I find uniquely interesting is this: the highest rates of this are occurring in the Midwest, the West and Alaska. The Midwest and the West were, at one time, the very breadbasket of the world! Can someone please explain to me how this has been allowed to happen?

Food Deserts are cropping up all over the American landscape because of persistent inflation, stagnant wages, Unaffordable housing, and Broken homes, but the government has no fix, because it cannot fix what it has worked so hard to produce. The mindset is the Big Brother can take care of us, feed, house, clothe and get us the needed medical care, well there was a group of people who thought like that in the bible. They ended up in slavery, the people of God, the Israelites, they went into Egypt strong and mighty and over time, the government wore them down and took everything from them.

What Has Caused Them to Explode

According to some reliable information, one of the main driving factors of the original and explosion of food deserts was the loss of Mom and Pop independent grocery stores. These were the small, neighborhood stores, the ones that knew you and your family and had everything for a healthy meal and snacks.  Over the past twenty years or so, the drive for large, consolidated, urban grocery stores have been driven out of business. The start of the desert. The hidden friend of this push was the call for gentrification in these neighborhoods.

Low-income, vulnerable areas, and certain urban areas have been ruled undesirable by most grocery chains and thus, the pullback created large voids and empty spots, where the independent store could no longer afford to operate, but the chain was not there to pick up the slack. It was a tough catch-22 when the families left in those areas had to start relying on cheaper, less healthy, quicker alternatives for the table each night. There has even been a decrease in farmers’ markets recently, government permits and regulations that were required made it too difficult to deal with.

The Dollar Doesn’t Go Far Enough

Since the mid-1970s, the dollar that we earn each day does not go as far as it once did. Let’s say, for the sake of this conversation, that the dollar that you earned in the 1970s was worth .90 back then, you could do much more then.  Moving forward to the early 2020s, your dollar now is worth about .65 for each dollar that you earn. You are not feeding your family on that amount of money, but the government tells you that it is on you to figure it all out. And if you cannot, you have made the mistakes.

We cannot ignore the damage that the Bubble Burst of 2008 and the Pandemic of 20220 did to the economy and the very poor recovery that was worked on for the poor and very poor of this nation. The government did many sleight of hand tricks during those two crisis points that did far more harm than good and yet told us that we would be okay if we just trusted them and did as we were told. That is a bad mindset, big brother cares about us! Hungry, rent increases, family disunity, and homelessness all spiked and we have not seen relief yet.

Now the government does provide aid to the poor and extremely poor and even the elderly, but there was a bump in the road that no one would admit to. Suddenly, people were struggling, hunger increasing, and no one could understand where the funds were going, the food was not showing up, and nursing homes were closing. No one understood until the cat got out of the bag. This one was not about the dollar not going far enough for the American in need; it was about theft and mishandling of the money altogether, it was being given to the illegals, and the citizen was being left in the cold.

The Introduction of a Starving Nation

There are so many factors that have come together to produce a starting nation, and not one strategy alone will fix it. However, many of them are key to ending the false narratives and mindsets that the American individual and family are to blame for causing hunger and food deserts. Remember, the news, the information that you listen to on the television set each night, is a storyline that has been crafted for you to hear, to listen to and to absorb so that you think, believe and thus behave as Big Brother desires you to.

They have developed new words, fancy, big words that make them sound as if they are knowledgeable and powerful and can fix what is broken. They can’t, they are the very ones that broke what was working in this nation decades ago. The core family, with a parent staying home and raising the family, the grandparents nearby to help train up the kids, the church directly involved in the community health and stability, the have’s and have-nots working together to make sure all made it through, long gone. Latch key kids, absentee parents, after-school programs, drive through dinners, broken homes, welcome to the food deserts of America. There are so many factors that have come together to produce a starting nation, and not one strategy alone will fix it. It is a Key Factor in Homelessness

Mindsets, that is what we are talking about, mindsets the homeless and what has or is what causing them to them to be homeless. Too many have listened to the news, read the reports and have not questioned the facts that are on their very own dinner table every night. They are struggling even though they have a roof over their heads! The blame game has been in full swing for several years and truth has gone into hiding, but food, as the great equalizer, cannot be denied.

So, if you must eat, and you have no money for whatever reason, the job is good, health bills, medications are too expensive, hours are cut, the job moved, which is the truth, maybe, you have to eat, that means bills are not going to be paid in full. The avalanche is the, you will not be able to do that for many months until there is a notice on your door, and suddenly you may have a new, unwelcome address. The old safety nets are gone; they were wasted on the illegals, so don’t count on them for the American in need.

The breakup of the core, traditional family, one male father and one female mother, and the children of that family, is a core reason that America is drifting and the government has encouraged this drift. But until we get back to one parent at home, affordable food, and a stable social life, homelessness will continue to knock at the door of the lives of those on the fringe. What I am saying is this, the government and its hired thinktanks want you to think homelessness boils down to one or two causes, but you must blow that thinking apart; those mindsets are wrong, the causes are multifaceted.

Conclusion

Food Desert, Food Insecurity new terms to describe an age old problem, people are hungry and today they cannot afford to feed their families. Once the Breadbasket of the world America now imports tons of foreign food

School children, the chronically ill and disabled, the elderly all those that food is needed to maintain health, food being the great equalizer. But our new mindsets that we have been trained to think about is no big problem, they will figure it out.

Homeless people acting a little foolish, out of sorts, irrational, could it be as simple as they have not eaten, not had water, need a little for food and water? But we do not make it easy for them to get the life sustaining food or water, why?
